Mark Wayne Bailey:
May 16th, 1947 – May 8th, 2011
The congregation of Church of the Loving Shepherd joins family and friends to mourn the death of The Rev. Dr. Mark Wayne Bailey, its Associate Pastor. He served the congregation in a variety of capacities for 50 years, and will be remembered for his vibrant musicianship and challenging preaching. Dr. Bailey succumbed to amyloidosis at Neighborhood Hospice. We are grateful for the care he received there.
Dr. Bailey was a Director level, non-profit administrator, consultant and educator with more than 30 years of broad-based experience. He had a consistent track record helping organizations grow toward their full potential.
Most recently, as an interim executive, Dr. Bailey guided the strategic reorganization of Creative Health Services – a tri-county, nine campus, behavioral health organization – assisting them to obtain full licensure and commendations from Commonwealth and private health insurers.
Dr. Bailey also coordinated and managed the organization and incorporation of a national trade association, The Internet Content Coalition (ICC), directed by a volunteer board of senior multi-media executives, and representing the online divisions of companies including CBS, CNET, MSNBC Reuters, Sony, New York Times, Time Inc. and Warner Bros. In his capacity as the ICC’s executive, Dr. Bailey initiated and implemented advocacy within the United States House, Senate and Administration.
A consultant specializing in strategic planning and board development, Dr. Bailey’s recent consulting credits include the J.R. Seehusen Associates, multi-national corporation consultants, and the LaSalle University Nonprofit Center. He authored articles and a booklet for Board Source (formerly the National Center for Nonprofit Boards) in Washington, D.C., and served as board president for Community Service Council of Chester County, an organization which founded many county health and human services programs including Chester County Cares.
An experienced educator, Dr. Bailey’s teaching venues ranged from an international union to local schools. With funding from the New York Department of Labor, he researched, developed and implemented worker hazard training for the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union. Locally Dr. Bailey taught in several Friends’ Schools and was headmaster of the Media Friends School. He also taught in the Tamarin School and at St. Dunstan’s School in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Most recently he taught graduate courses in research and social policy at Widener University.
Dr. Bailey is a founding leader and director at Bournelyf in Westtown. Bournelyf is both a non-profit retreat center and a home for several community-based groups: Church of the Loving Shepherd, an ecumenical Christian congregation; Bournelyf Special Camp, for children with intellectual disabilities; Spiritual Connections, a women’s spirituality group; and Willow Branch Sangha, a Buddhist sitting group. In the recent past Bournelyf was the starting home of Beth Chaim Reform Congregation and a parish nurse program shared with Mt. Carmel, COGIC and Rice’s Temple, AUMP.
Bailey’s MSS and Ph.D. degrees were earned at the Bryn Mawr College Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research. His Th.M. was from Princeton Theological Seminary and his M.Div. from The Philadelphia Divinity School of the Protestant Episcopal Church. Mark earned his B.A. degree from Temple University. By avocation he was a classical musician with many performance credits.
He is survived by one aunt, Frances Gibson of Dayton, Ohio, a brother, George Bradley Bailey and sister-in-law Eleanor, a nephew, Andrew Bailey and a niece Kimberly Bailey Francis.
A service celebrating his life will be held on the grounds of Bournelyf, 1066 South New Street, West Chester, on June 18th, 2011 at 10:30 AM. Burial at Birmingham-Lafayette Cemetery was private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Church of the Loving Shepherd, PO Box 101, Westtown, PA, 19395 with the designation, Mark Wayne Bailey Fund.
